When to work (and not work) for free

Unless you’re on salary, every hour you’re not seeing clients is an hour you’re not getting paid.

Your time as a therapist is literally money.

So how should you evaluate non-paid opportunities?

In general, my advice to therapists is to not work for free. Your expertise is valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

There are a few exceptions.

  • If it’s pro bono work that’s meaningful to you

  • If it will build your business, not just “get exposure”

  • If it will build relationships

If a company wants to “pick your brain,” send them your hourly rate.

If you’re asked to speak, respond with, “Thank you for thinking of me for your event/conference/panel. Is this a paid opportunity?”

Being a healer doesn’t mean working for free.
