How to get referrals from doctors
Doctors are great referral sources for therapists.
But actually getting referrals from them can be a challenge.
If you send letters or postcards in the mail, they’ll probably end up in the trash.
Here’s what to do instead.
First, before you can ask for referrals, you need to clarify your niche. Otherwise, doctors won’t know who to refer to you. Don’t skip this step.
Then think about which doctors work with your niche. For example, pediatricians who also work with kids or OBGYNs who also work with women. Create a list of these doctors in your area. As Kelley Stevens of Private Practice Pro explains in this Instagram post, it’s a numbers game, so make a big list.
Next, recognize that doctors usually aren’t the ones who make referrals. This is key. It’s typically their office manager, receptionist, or person who works at the front desk.
Call their office and ask to speak to the “referral coordinator.” Get a script from Allison Puryear of Abundance Practice Building in this Instagram post. Build a relationship with this person.
Offer to stop by and drop off lunch for the office. If you can’t afford lunch, coffee and donuts or pastries work well, too.
When they refer someone to you, send them a thank you note so you stay top of mind.
Finally, if you’re not getting referrals, refer back to step one.
