How to write good subject lines
Choosing the right email subject line is important, but it’s probably not as important as you think.
People are more likely to open your emails if they trust your brand and expect to receive value from your emails, regardless of the subject line you choose.
With that said, follow these rules when writing email subject lines.
First, don’t deceive your subscribers. I’ve seen brands use “Re:” or “Fwd:” in their subject lines to make it look like a reply or forwarded email. Don’t do that. It doesn’t build trust with your audience.
Don’t use clickbait. Again, this doesn’t build trust with your audience. Tell people in the subject line what they can expect from the email, and then deliver on that promise.
Use an emoji. You’ll notice I use the 📣 at the beginning of every Therapy Marketer email subject line. This helps it to stand out in the inbox. Just don’t overdo it.
Keep it short. If your subject line is too long, then people won’t read it. It also will get cut off in their inbox. Keep it within 30 to 50 characters or 4 to 7 words.
Be consistent with your brand voice. If your brand voice is more serious, then it probably doesn’t make sense to use puns in your subject lines.
Finally, don’t forget the preview text. Use it to expand on your subject line without repeating the same information.
