How to niche a group therapy practice

If you run a group practice, or you’re thinking about starting one, your niche may change as you hire other therapists with different specialities and/or areas of expertise.

It’s important not to get too broad. Remember if you try to be for everyone, you won’t be for anyone. You don't want to be a "one-stop-shop."

There are two primary ways to niche your group practice.

  1. Modality: the approach you offer (e.g. CBT)

  2. Population: the audience you serve (e.g. Black women)

Here are a few group practice examples with a clear niche.

Mindful Psychology Associates in IL specializes in college student mental health.

The Northampton Center for Couples Therapy in MA exclusively offers couples therapy.

Trust Mental Health in CA specializes in treating people of color.

Keeping your niche narrow will also help you recruit like-minded therapists to join your group practice.
