How long does it take to fill a therapy practice?

If you’re new to private practice, then you may be wondering how long it normally takes a therapist to fill their caseload.

I was curious, too, so I polled my audience on Twitter/X. This is what they said.

It’s a small sample size (n=44), but more than half of respondents (61.4%) said it took six months or more, with one in three (34.1%) saying it took more than a year.

A lot of therapists I speak to expect to fill up quickly when they open their practice and feel like they’re doing something wrong when they don’t, but it takes time.

Be patient and focus on building your referral network.

And if you aren’t getting referrals, then your niche may not be narrow enough.
